Why Movies are an Awesome French-Learning Resource

I have loved movies since I was young, and when I decided to learn French, I was excited to watch French movies from the start. Incidentally, I realized that movies were not only a great way for me to learn more French, but a really enjoyable method of education. I went on to study French and Québécois film in college and, thanks in part to watching so many movies, even became a fluent speaker.

This article falls into a series of posts about different resources that you can use during your own French journey to help you reach your language-learning goals. Keep reading to find out about using movies as a French resource.

1. Culturally Relevant

In France, popular movies are highly anticipated, become prevalent topics of conversation, and sometimes turn into “must-see” classics for future generations. Watching French-language movies will allow you to experience this part of French culture in the same way as past, present, and future Francophone generations.

2. Movies as Art

Filmmaking is a unique art form that invites viewers into a new world. This concept was born and perfected in France and is still very much a part of France’s identity. By consuming film, you will take part in the history of this art while learning the language through words and phrases in context.

3. Sparking Discussion

Films are one of the most common topics of conversation around the world. Whether it’s chatting about what movies you’ve seen lately or sharing your first thoughts after leaving the theatre, you’re bound to talk about film from time to time. Try striking up a conversation with others – in person or on a language-learning app – about a French-language movie you’ve seen. It’s a great opportunity to boost your conversation skills while also refining your comprehension and recall skills.

4. French Celebrities

Just like in the United States, actors and actresses in France garner a lot of fame. Watching French movies and scoping out some of your favorite French actors will open the door to even more French language content. For example, following French celebrities on social media or watching their interviews where they discuss their roles can be a great way to further expand your vocabulary and cultural knowledge.

5. Keep Watching Your Faves

Though watching French movies to learn the language can be a welcome change from the same old, feel-good American movies, you can still watch your favorite English-language movies in French. In fact, you won’t have much trouble finding a large portion of popular English-language movies in French. Why? Well, because English-language movies are popular on an international scale, many films are dubbed for French consumers. This means that you can watch your personal classics with a French twist that will boost your language skills.

Great article! I love watching movies essentially because it helps me get exposed to the language, and I get familiar with the pronunciation and the vocablulary. And most of all, it’s fun watching movies and learning at the same time. It’s a great way not to feel that you are learning and you can enjoy! I am watching movies in English on Netflix and it helps me a lot improve my English.
