Studying in France as Americans: Rest, Relaxation, and Quality Time

Another summer month in Reims, France has come to an end, and Jalen and I thoroughly enjoyed taking it easy this July. As graduate students in Logistics and Public Law at the Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne, we’re doing our best to appreciate our time away from academia and recharge for the second year of our master’s degrees. Read on to see how we’ve been spending our time over the past few weeks.

Early in the month, we decided to explore some of the spots in Reims that we hadn’t had the chance to visit yet, and we made a weekend staycation out of it! We went to two light shows at the Basilique Saint-Remi, the Chapelle Foujita, the Planétarium de Reims, the Cryptoportique, a pop-up plant shop, the Musée Saint-Remi, and the fair. It was a busy few days and a wonderful reminder of how fortunate we are to live in such an amazing French city.

To our delight, even our action-packed weekend extravaganza didn’t exhaust all of the summer events that Reims has to offer. Therefore, we also had the chance to visit la Guinguette Rémoise. It’s a small, charming open-air bar that serves delicious food and drinks. Offering pizza, burgers, and beverages ranging from affordable beer to high-end champagne, there was something for everyone.

Jalen and I really like spending time in nature when possible, which is why we often hang out in Reims’ numerous parks. On one sunny weekend, we took a picnic to the Parc de Champagne and relaxed outside.

As much as we like the outdoors, neither of us really appreciate high temperatures. Lucky for us, this summer has been a particularly cool and rainy one in France. While many people don’t appreciate the chilly, cloudy days, Jalen and I have been loving taking walks around town without getting hot and sweaty.

As has been the case since April, Jalen works hard at his internship on weekdays. Between gaining knowledge in his field, using multiple languages every day, and building relationships with his coworkers, he couldn’t be more pleased with his experience.

All in all, we had a dreamy month of July. Soaking in the beauty and pleasures of living in France has replenished our motivation and reminded us of exactly why we came here in the first place.

We hope that your summer has been equally agreeable – regardless of where you live! If you have any questions or want to know more, leave us a comment down below.
