Sarah Donnelly’s “The Only American in Paris” Review: Unparalleled Comedy

Last Saturday, after spending the afternoon in Paris, Jalen and I headed to the Théâtre BO Saint Martin to do something we’ve never done before in France: see a comedy show! From the second we started following stand-up comedian Sarah Donnelly on Instagram and TikTok, we knew seeing her perform in person was a must. After laughing through her hour-long show, “The Only American in Paris,” we can say that we were definitely not disappointed!

Sarah Donnelly is an American who’s lived in France for years. And, as any foreigner here knows, that’s more than enough time to rack up a slew of hysterical experiences that we expats are all too familiar with. From tales of her misadventures at the préfecture, to quips about the lengths we Americans will go to to stay in France, Sarah’s jokes were relatable to say the least. Her hilarious storytelling punctuated by light-hearted jabs at les français, a healthy dose of self-deprecation, and just the right amount of raunchy jokes had Jalen and I in stitches.

Even though some of her subject matter didn’t speak to us directly, like being married to a French person or raising French children, those anecdotes were entertaining just the same. Her fiery energy never faltered, and that’s why every punchline landed – even with a crowd made up of everyone from seasoned immigrants to day-one tourists. Though we think the show is best suited for anglophones who’ve made France their home, if you’re down to get silly about being a foreigner abroad, you’ll have a great time.
