Life in France

Best Things to Do in Troyes, France

Jalen and I lived in Troyes for the entirety of our time as English assistants with the Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF). Located in the Grand Est region on the Seine river, it’s a beautiful city that we really grew to love. The iconic timber-framed architecture, abundance of striking churches, rich history dating back to the first century BC, delicious food, and great shopping opportunities make Troyes one of France’s best-kept secrets! If you’re lucky enough to visit, here’s what Jalen and I recommend you do.

Where to Shop

  • Rue Émile Zola: Some of the best shopping in Troyes is located along this colorful road in the heart of downtown. From Promod, Hema, and Celio, to thrift shops, bookstores, and chocolateries, there’s something for everybody in this historical shopping hotspot!

  • McArthurGlen Outlet Mall: If one street of shopping isn’t enough, Troyes has an outlet mall that’s just a quick bus ride away. With more than 110 stores selling 210 brands, you can spend hours shopping designer products at discounted prices.

What to Eat

  • L’Odyssée: This restaurant, equipped with both indoor and outdoor seating, is one of our very favorites! Whether you want to have an afternoon coffee, chat the night away with a good beer, enjoy an appetizing meal, or indulge in a French dessert, l’Odyssée is your place! Troyes’ regional cheese, chaource, and Troyes’ culinary specialty, andouillette, are both on the menu to try here as well.
  • Five Pizza Original: With low prices, customizable pizzas, free wifi, and comfy seating, this pizza spot is a regular hangout for Jalen and me. While it isn’t “traditional” French cuisine, the pizzas follow the current culinary trend in France of making popular dishes like raclette, cordon bleu, kebab, fondue, and tartiflette into tasty fast food.

Places to Visit

  • Musée Saint-Loup: This three-in-one museum has the perfect amount of art to occupy your afternoon without being overwhelming. The fine-arts section includes paintings from the 14th to 19th centuries, the natural history exhibit contains over 300 animal specimens, and the archeology division showcases archeological collections from Troyes and ancient mediterranean civilizations. The museum’s exceptional holdings are sure to captivate visitors of all ages and interests.

Things to See

  • Cœur de Troyes: Constructed by local artists, the Cœur de Troyes has become emblematic of the city. Every evening it lights up red, and in warm weather, it is surrounded by tall water jets. Its location offers a beautiful view of the canal and of Troyes’ own lock bridge. You simply can’t visit Troyes without stopping by!

  • Lili: Another emblem of the city, Lili, is a bronze sculpture created by Hungarian artist Andras Lapis. With her large hat, she is sat on a bench reading a book and is always ready for a photo. You can’t miss her prominent central location between the Préfecture de l’Aube and the Cité du Vitrail. Make sure to pay her a visit while you’re in Troyes!
